Myths About Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers have become a Hollywood and ‘Essex’ trademark especially when we think of celebrities like Rylan Clark and There are many myths and horror stories which surround dental veneers. Denthub is going to clear a few things up with this blog.

MYTH #1: “Veneers look so fake”

Veneers got this stigma attached to them back in the ’80s and 90’s because they were simply too white, too big, too straight and simply too fake looking! The whole point of having veneers is to finally feel confident and happy with your smile and the appearance of your teeth, not for people to see your teeth before they see you! We want to be remembered to have a beautiful smile and Denthub have created beautiful smiled for hundreds of patients using the dental veneers treatment.

Veneers which have been crafted and implanted correctly look natural and are each individually designed to fit each person’s individual face and mouth shape. Fitting dental veneers takes skill and artistry to create natural-looking lines and slopes which appear in teeth naturally.

Our dentists spend time with our patients to ensure they fully understand the look and appearance, from shape size and colour our patients want to achieve, effectively you help us design your new smile.

MYTH #2: Anyone Can Have Veneers

Veneers are now popular than ever and are trending worldwide on social media, from footballers like Christiano Ronaldo to actors, reality stars and social media influencers. However, they are not suitable for all… or at least perhaps temporarily. Whether or not you are a candidate for dental veneers depends on the quality and the health of your gums. Even a procedure as simple as teeth whitening should not be performed unless your teeth and gums are healthy. If you have tooth decay, gum disease, or any kind of infection, this will prevent you from getting veneers since these conditions must first be healed before a cosmetic procedure can be completed.

However, if your teeth and gums are not in the best of shape (not everyone’s are) our dentists can diagnose and recommend a treatment plan to heal and restore the health in your teeth to get them to a suitable standard to have dental veneers fitted.

MYTH #3: Veneers Stain

FALSE. Your natural teeth are susceptible to staining because they are porous made up of tooth enamel and can be very easily tainted by red wine, tea, coffee and other foods. Veneers are made from porcelain, which does not stain.

Gum recession is another reason why people may think that porcelain veneers stain. However, there is an altogether different explanation for this:  Gum recession happens when your gums recede upwards and expose your natural tooth at the top, your natural tooth, of course, does stain, and this confuses some people as they see a porcelain veneer tooth with some dull staining around the gums. It’s important to stay vigilant about gum recession, which is why your dental hygienist will check this at every hygiene visit, giving you tips on proper brushing, so you don’t exacerbate any the recession.
